Tony Montana, portrayed by Al Pacino in the movie Scarface, is one of the most recognizable icons of the modern day gangster. A symbol of the lowly individual’s rise to power and descent into madness, he has become one of the most popular movie characters of all time. In fact, Empire Magazine named Tony Montana as the 27th greatest movie character in 2008. He is the stereotype of the tough guy that goes after what he wants with ruthless efficiency, yet he is also a warning of what happens when one gains too much power and loses perspective. That is what makes him such a hero for so many people. He has been quoted in other films, games, and even popular music gives homage to Tony Montana as a cultural icon.

He is a reminder of the mentality of the mobster from the Nineteen Twenties. It was time of gangsters and their family connections, and the rise of organized crime, ranging from bootlegging during Prohibition, to extortion, bribery and worse. It was a time when a man could rise to the top on his own merit…or end up a memory and a footnote if he crossed the wrong people. Shows like the Sopranos show the modern day Mafia and how they move in the shadows manipulating people and events for their own agendas. But who doesn’t dream of such power? Who wouldn’t want to be the person pulling the strings and rising to the top of the heap? We all have those thoughts and fantasies and through characters like Tony Montana we get to live those dreams, albeit more safely.

Please allow me to once again suggest that you get yourself and your loved ones one of our terrific gangster clothing outfits right here at GangsterOutfits.com and enjoy.

Like many mobsters, “Bugsy” Benjamin Siegel has lived on in several novels and films, including both versions of the Godfather, and 1991 films, Bugsy and Mobsters. He was a gangster that started off as a small time member of a street gang when he was young and eventually made the shift into Italian-American organized crime. Eventually he became involved in a major building development in Las Vegas when he attempted to go legitimate. His activities included everything from early protection rackets, to gambling and car theft, although he expanded into bootlegging in New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia.

In 1927, the East Coast mob sent him to California to work with the mobsters there and develop gambling rackets in Los Angeles. It was shortly after that he earned his nickname. During a police investigation that left his reputation in ruins, he was given the nickname Bugsy by the media to explain his erratic behavior. He of course hated it, as it was a slang term that meant ‘crazy’ and no one would call him Bugsy to his face.

His chance to open a legitimate business came to him in Las Vegas where he entered into a partnership to build and open the Flamingo Hotel. It was an ambitious project, but one that slowly proved doomed to failing to be worth the investment. From the moment Siegel formed the Nevada Project Corporation of California and named himself president and principal stockholder, the Flamingo project became a syndicate run operation.

Due to a series of bad decisions, mismanagement and overspending, the opening of the Flamingo was less profitable then hoped. Already deeply in debt with the mob, he opened the hotel early in the hopes that the casino would at least generate enough revenue. The hotel itself, however, was unfinished. The air conditioning failed regularly, the luxury rooms were not ready, and the lobby itself had the drop clothes and other signs of construction. Even worse, few celebrities showed up so there were few people to give the Flamingo a good endorsement. The entire operation was shut down in 1947.

In conclusion, allow me a moment to reiterate the fact that here at GangsterOutfits.com is where you will find the best gangster outfits for your money.

The American Mafia has its roots in the Sicilian Mafia in Italy. An Italian-American criminal organization, it is a secret group like its Italian counterpart and also has no formal name. Called the Cosa Nostra, it is translated in English as either ‘our thing’ or ‘this thing we have’. The American Mafia began in the 19th century as waves of Italian immigrants arrived on the east coast, and settled predominantly in New York City’s Lower East Side. Although it came from the Sicilian Mafia, the American Mafia has been a separate branch for many years although they do cooperate in various types of criminal activities.

In New York, there are five main Mafia families, known as the Five Families. These are the Gambino, the Lucchese, the Genovese, the Bonanno, and the Columbo families. Presently, they control most of the organized crime in the United States and this allows them to control the criminal activities in many major cities around the country. The press has coined the term “National Crime Syndicate” to refer to all organized crime including the Mafia, but it seems that the Mafia may even control over most of this group as well. This is because, while each family operates separate, the bosses of each major family cooperate to make sure their goals are achieved.

In the media, however, the Mafia enjoys a certain amount of romanticism and fame. There is honor and loyalty among the families as well as brutal efficiency. The films and novels written about the Twenties and featuring these gangsters and mob bosses depict brave heroes and the powerful bosses that oppose them. The popular image of the mobster is as much a part of American culture as the cowboy and series like the Sopranos show their ongoing appeal to us all.

Gangster is a term associated with members of organized crime during the time of Prohibition during the 1920s. At that time, the Eighteenth Amendment of the Constitution had banned not only the sale of alcohol for consumption, but its transportation and manufacture. This was the time of the speakeasy, where people gathered in clubs that secretly sold alcohol, and flappers rubbed elbows with gangsters, drinking alongside the men in their bid for individuality and freedom from stereotypical role models. This was also the Jazz Age, and many young people enjoying it also wanted their alcohol, and this is why the gangsters’ flourished. Al Capone, Public Enemy Number One, was the most famous gangster of all, controlling Chicago.

Although just about every major city had a gangster element, Chicago’s Al Capone lives on in our movies and popular culture as a modern day legend. He prospered during this violent period after taking over the business and made a fortune within two years on selling alcohol alone, while his other rackets provided still more income. He did, however, spend a good amount of fortune bribing politicians and the police to make sure his businesses continued without problems, and to make sure those politicians were reelected into office. But Chicago of the 1920s was still a dangerous place and although he dealt with his enemies ruthlessly, he had many more. In the end, though, it was not the mobsters of Chicago that stopped him but being arrested for tax evasion. After eleven years in jail and failing health, he retired, no longer feared as he had been during the time of his greatest power and influence.

Although the term Mafia is used in a more general sense to indicate organized criminal organizations, the actual word originally referred to a brotherhood that began in 19th century Sicily. Also known as the Cosa Nostra, it was a loose association of criminal groups with a common system of conduct and organization. Each of these groups claimed control over a particular territory in which it controlled its various activities, or rackets, and these were originally a town, village or a neighborhood of a larger city. These groups were known as families, clans, or associations.

During the late 19th century, offshoots of the Mafia began to appear in the United States due to a sudden influx of Italian immigrants, and in time the term began to be applied to any organized criminal group that operated in a similar fashion. This wasn’t necessarily popular with law makers, however, and at least one antimafia judge at the time, Giovanni Falcone, objected to applying the term so liberally, citing that people were so afraid of the Mafia, they wouldn’t speak the word, but then went to the opposite extreme of applying it to things that had nothing to do with the organization.
