Gangster is a term associated with members of organized crime during the time of Prohibition during the 1920s. At that time, the Eighteenth Amendment of the Constitution had banned not only the sale of alcohol for consumption, but its transportation and manufacture. This was the time of the speakeasy, where people gathered in clubs that secretly sold alcohol, and flappers rubbed elbows with gangsters, drinking alongside the men in their bid for individuality and freedom from stereotypical role models. This was also the Jazz Age, and many young people enjoying it also wanted their alcohol, and this is why the gangsters’ flourished. Al Capone, Public Enemy Number One, was the most famous gangster of all, controlling Chicago.

Although just about every major city had a gangster element, Chicago’s Al Capone lives on in our movies and popular culture as a modern day legend. He prospered during this violent period after taking over the business and made a fortune within two years on selling alcohol alone, while his other rackets provided still more income. He did, however, spend a good amount of fortune bribing politicians and the police to make sure his businesses continued without problems, and to make sure those politicians were reelected into office. But Chicago of the 1920s was still a dangerous place and although he dealt with his enemies ruthlessly, he had many more. In the end, though, it was not the mobsters of Chicago that stopped him but being arrested for tax evasion. After eleven years in jail and failing health, he retired, no longer feared as he had been during the time of his greatest power and influence.
